The wind howled outside as Rapunzel silently climbed the staircase of the grand house in which she was employed. A shawl was wrapped tightly around her shoulders, bringing her a little warmth since the fires had long ago gone out, leaving her in darkness. She slipped into the master suite and over to the vanity where she'd seen the lady of the house put on her jewelry every morning. Rapunzel grinned as she saw the tiny wooden boxes in which the valuables were stored. Rapunzel had always prided herself on having perfect timing, in almost any situation. She was also very clear about keeping her jobs separate - cleaning up after spoiled nobles by day and stealing what she could during her free time. Today, however, she'd reached her breaking point. She'd spent a month doing the work of seven girls for practically nothing. Her pickpocketing sprees were the only reason she was still able to pay for her room at the inn. The residents of the house were gone for the evening at some fancy party and wouldn't be returning for a few hours at least. Plenty of time for Rapunzel to take what she wanted and get away. She had just selected two jewel necklaces she knew wouldn't be missed when she heard footsteps downstairs. She cautiously headed for the stairs, listening closely for further movement. It was still too early for the family to be back, but she couldn't think of anyone else who would come in - almost all of the nobles were going to the party. There was nothing to be seen from the landing, so she went down a few steps until she heard another noise. "Who's there?" she called, holding her candle out to see better and wishing she'd thought to bring her trusty dagger to work that day. In her rush, she'd forgotten about the necklaces that were still clutched in her other hand.
