PERSONALITY The most important thing in Klaus' life is his family. They are the reason he acts the way he does. The anger and betrayal he felt toward his mother and step-father after they disowned him made him paranoid and it's hard for him to trust those unrelated to him. He gets along best with Elijah and Rebekah, the two siblings who have stuck with him the longest. That being said, he can get into year-long fights with all of his brothers. Elijah and Finn's morals clash with Klaus' sadistic nature - and sometimes Kol doesn't think before he attacks.
It's been questioned whether or not Klaus has the ability to love at all, and the answer is yes. He was once in love, but that was a long time ago and he's since shut off his humanity. The only one who can bring it out of him now is Caroline. Otherwise he's obsessive and emotional. Power-hungry, volatile, careless, impulsive, jealous, manipulative and competitive have all been used to describe him.

HISTORY: Klaus was born the third son of wealthy landowners in tenth century America, in what would become Mystic Falls, Virginia. His parents, Esther and Mikael, had come over from the old country after their infant son had died in the plague. In the New World they made friends with the small village consisting of a pack of werewolves, and were able to have five more sons and a daughter - Elijah, Niklaus, Finn, Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik.
All of the siblings were close growing up, the boys playing and hunting together and Rebekah managing to work her way into the fun on occasion. They were close with Esther as well, who made sure they always put family first, and Mikael, who made sure they stayed out of trouble. Niklaus was not so fond of his father, however.
Mikael was always hard on Klaus, who liked to cause trouble, getting into fights and sneaking out during the full moon to watch the werewolves transform. Nothing he did could ever please his father, but it only made him strive for his approval more. Nevertheless, it did not diminish his troublemaking.
As a teenager, Klaus made the acquaintance of a village girl named Tatia. She was gorgeous and he tried for years to impress her, but to no avail. She eventually wound up having a child out of wedlock, never naming the father, and most of the community shunned her for it, but Klaus and Elijah stood by her. It was around this time that the oldest of Esther's sons realized they were both in love with the same woman. It caused a great rift between them.
Tragedy stuck when Klaus was in his early twenties. He'd convinced his youngest brother, Henrik - not yet thirteen - to join him in watching the werewolves transform. But unlike previous nights, the werewolves found them watching and, unable to control themselves, brutally killed Henrik. Distraught at the death of another son, Esther and Mikael asked a witch friend to make their remaining children immortal. When she refused, Esther took it upon herself to do it, being a witch herself.
One night Mikael gave his children wine laced with blood that they would later learn was Tatia's. When they had all drunk, he stabbed each of them in the heart. When they woke, they had become vampires. But there were complications. Sunlight burned, they couldn't go into homes uninvited, vervain - a common herb - hurt them, and a stake made from the white oak trees that grew in the area could kill them for good. Then there was the blood thirst. Try as they might, the family could not control the temptation of all the villagers living amongst them and they began to feed.
Then, on his first full moon as a vampire, something strange happened to Klaus. He started transforming like the werewolves did. It was proof of Esther's affair, that Klaus's real father was in fact a werewolf. To keep him from being a hybrid, Esther bound his werewolf side with a spell that could not be broken without a moonstone and the blood of Tatia's doppelganger - which he would wait centuries to be born. It was all the motivation Mikael needed to attack the werewolves and kill the family of Klaus' real father. Esther was turning her back on Klaus. In a fit of rage, he slaughtered her and most of the village, telling his siblings it was Mikael.
The family went their separate ways after that. Both Finn and Kol decided to go out on their own, but Elijah and Rebekah promised to always stay with Klaus. And they would, in one way or another, as they traveled the world.
In 1114 AD, they were in Italy. Rebekah, ever the romantic, had fallen for a man named Alexander there. He turned out to be one of five special vampire hunters. When Alexander descovered what the family was, he invited all five of them to a party where he and the other hunters used these magical daggers to put them to sleep, as ordinary stakes did nothing on them. But Klaus' werewolf side kept the daggers from working on him, and he killed the hunters and undaggered all his siblings but Finn, who was becoming judgemental and angry of what they were.
As a result of slaying The Five, Klaus was forced to endure 52 years, 4 months and 9 days of the Hunter's Curse, torturous hallucinations that haunted his dreams and every waking moment in an attempt to make him kill himself. The only positive thing to come from meeting the hunters was learning that there was a cure to vampirism.
Some time after the hallucinations wore off, Klaus and Elijah created the myth of the Sun and Moon Curse in an effort to put every creature on Earth on the lookout for both the moonstone and the doppelganger. The curse was said to remove the sun and moon's sway over vampires and werewolves.
Klaus and Elijah were living as English noblemen in the late fifteenth century when they met Katerina Petrova, the first of Tatia's doppelgangers. Sadly, Katerina managed to escape with the moonstone before Klaus could go through with the ritual. She was then turned into a vampire, making her useless to him. In retaliation, he traveled to Bulgaria and killed her parents and sister.
Come 1922, Klaus had daggered Kol and separated from Elijah for a short while. He and Rebekah were on the run from Mikael, who had become a vampire hunter. They met with Stefan Salvatore, a savage vampire, in Chicago. Rebekah fell in love with him right away and he and Klaus became good friends. However, with Mikael fast on their heels, Klaus was forced to compell Stefan to forget them and flee with his sister. But when Rebekah decided she would rather stop running in favor of being with Stefan, Klaus daggered her as well.
By 2010, Mikael had been subdued by a powerful witch and Klaus reunited with his remaining sibling in an effort to break the curse with the newest doppelganger, Elena Gilbert, who resided in their old home of Mystic Falls and happened to be seeing Stefan Salvatore. After months of annoying cat and mouse games with Elena and her never-ending list of protectors, Klaus came out victorious. He had broken the curse and had become a hybrid - only to find that his most trusted ally, his big brother, was planning to betray him. And so Klaus daggered him too.
To ensure he would never be lonely again, Klaus began to make hybrids of his own. For a year he continued to toy with Elena and her friends. He even had Stefan under his control for some time, until he, too, turned on the original hybrid and managed to undagger Klaus' entire family and awaken Esther. And yet somehow, they made it passed all the betrayal. They were a family again for the first time in centuries, but only for a short while. Now Klaus finds himself in a new world, not unlike the one he was born into, only with more magic than he's ever seen. He likes Aldeon and believes he and his hybrids will do well here.
